It all started in Middleton in 1856... with the arrival of the railroad. Middleton Station, as it was originally named, became the site of the first railway station located between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River. The railroad station was the hub of what was to become downtown Middleton. The train depot still exists today and houses the Middleton Tourism Commission, where you will find visitor information.
What made Middleton such an attractive spot for the era's most important mode of transportation? Obviously, Middleton’s centrally geographic location was convenient and “in the middle of it all”. Other reasons may refer back to some of the same things that make Middleton a fun and unique destination today – the friendly people, the convenient amenities and the scenic landscape.
The tale of Middleton is a blend of fascinating stories of many genuine individuals whose lives and spirits fashioned the growth of this community. The fur trader, Michael St. Cyr, greeted his Native American customers. Middleton’s first inn and wagon shop opened for business. Escaping slaves took refuge in the underground railroad that ran through the cellars beneath what is now the Stamm House restaurant. Middleton’s reputation for providing a warm welcome to visitors dates back in history and proudly continues today.
Middleton was a popular campsite for the Algonquin Indians. They were known as mound builders and their efforts can still be seen today at various places through the area, including Governor Nelson State Park. Later the Winnebago (Ho-Chunk) Indians became the dominant tribe in the region.
Middleton was first explored by the French. It existed under the flags of France, and Britain then finally became a post of the U.S. under terms of the Ordinance of 1787, although control was in dispute until 1815. German nationality became prominent and a German- language supplement appeared in the local newspaper.
